Why Twitter?

For the last couple of months now I've been using Twitter, I am following 43 people and 42 people are following me. But, who are these people I follow and who are the people who follow me, and why on earth would we want this to happen?

Firstly, if the 43 people I follow, around 7 are people I know such as friends and family. Then I have added people or sites that interest me. Sky News brings me the latest news via Twitter, PSXextreme keeps me up to date with latest developments in the console world, BBC Click keeps me up to date in the technology world plus I follow a few actual people related to gaming, news, tv and the arts.

Now comes the strange part, following me are 43 people, 7 of them are people I know, a few are following back from the people already mentioned, and the rest are just people or services who have added me! Now, 99% of those people or services just tick over and tweet just once in a while, some are just people advertising a service and some are just self-obsessed buffoons who advertise products or sites they are involved in.

There are also a few people who are genuinely interesting, and like myself just on Twitter to stay in touch with friends and family and to make new friends and discover new sites from the information passed on through Twitter. It really is a mixed bag, and I can see why people say that Twitter is like Marmite, you will either love it or hate it.

Personally, I use it because it's much easier than keeping a blog up-to-date constantly. My friends and family use it to keep tabs on me and I use it to share information and sites I have discovered, along with little updates on what I have been up to. Twitter, in this respect is very useful, especially when used in conjunction with a blog (I use Twitter and this Blogspot account for example).

So, after experimenting with Twitter, will I keep at it? Probably yes... 140 letters a post means I can do it quickly online or via my mobile phone which is pretty awesome. So, if you have not added me yet, please do and share your knowledge and your life with me.
